How Does an Assessment Work?

Many people hesitate to seek a comprehensive substance use assessment because they’re unsure what it involves or worried about what it might lead to. My goal is to make the process transparent, respectful, and steady.

Step 1: Reach Out

You can contact me through the website to ask questions or reach me directly via email or phone. You’ll receive clear information about the process, fees, and what to expect prior to the assessment.

Step 2: The Assessment Session

Your assessment takes place virtually through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

During the session, we’ll talk about:

  • Your substance use history and current concerns

  • What prompted you to seek an assessment now

  • Mental health, stressors, relationships, and supports

  • Strengths, coping strategies, and goals

This is a nonjudgmental, conversational process. My role is to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and help make sense of the full picture—not to rush you toward a specific outcome.

Step 3: Understanding & Feedback

Together, we’ll make sense of what came up during the assessment. I’ll share clinical insights and reflect patterns I notice, while honoring your perspective and lived experience.

Step 4: Next Steps (If and When You’re Ready)

At the end of the process, you’ll receive clear, individualized feedback along with thoughtful recommendations tailored to your needs. If you choose, I can also offer guidance on possible next steps and provide referrals or resources when appropriate.

Recommendations may include education programs related to impaired driving (such as Driving with Care Level 1 or Level 2), relapse prevention or substance use treatment services ranging from outpatient to residential care, or referrals for individual work with a mental health provider or substance use counselor.

In some cases, no additional services are recommended—it depends entirely on the individual and their unique situation.
